Mother Monster.

The style is GAGA.

Some call her style “genius.”  Others prefer “crazy.”  And then there is that proportion of the population that just doesn’t care, but find her pretty entertaining. No matter what, you have to give her some kind of props for wearing what she does-without a care in the world.

Since her days as Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, Gaga’s style has evolved and taken the fashion world by storm.  It’s evolved from the hallways of Manhattan's Convent of the Sacred Heart School to, well, EVERYWHERE: the streets of London, New York, Tokyo, and even my very own Austin, Texas.

Back in her high school days, no one would suspect Gaga for who she is today.  A natural brunette, Gaga’s style actually was normal-well, to her standards.  Sporting jeans, suspenders, and a white tank in 2007…are we sure that this was the Mother Monster herself?

Since then, there has been a noticeable change is her style.  In a June 2009 interview with People Magazine Gaga said that her outfits are from her own ideas.   She gets some help though, collaborating with designers to make sure that her creations are just what she wants.  One of her more popular accessories are these Alexander McQueen shoes.   If you buy these, you better make sure that you have 911 on speed dial.  You’re likely to fall.

Now Gaga has worn everything from dresses made of meat, to bubbles, to barely anything.  One thing that you never see her in-denim.  This may have something to do with the fact that her and country music go together about as well as ice cream and pickles.  Recently however (in Austin, Texas no less), she was spotted wearing the unthinkable-JEANS.  I mean, her wearing pants in general is pretty shocking, but jeans?  Of course she put her own “Gaga” flair on them, and it may have something to do with the fact that she just released a “Country Road Version of her recent hit “Born This Way."

So go forth, and follow these words of the Mother Monster herself:
"Do not allow people to dim your shine because they are blinded. Tell them to put on some sunglasses, cause we were born this way bitch!"

She's Pretty Reckless

There are few people whose style has changed more than Taylor Momsen.  Since her days as the adorable “Cindy Lou Who” in the 2000 film The Grinch, she has gone from feminine, cute pieces, to looking taking “grunge” to a whole new level.  This may have something to do with her emergence into the music scene with her band The Pretty Wreckless , or wanting to break the mold.  Who knows?  I don’t say that I’m a mind reader.

Honestly, I don’t know where to begin with Momsen’s style.  Probally, the reason that I’m not championing her as a fashion queen is because I don’t think that clothes should look as if you took them from a vampire, ran over them with a truck, and stuck them through a shredder.

    Remember: Personal opinion.

Now, some parts of her style she does do well.  She knows what looks good on her, and what she can accentuate.  She plays up her long legs with distressed leggings, tights, and heels.  She also shows quite a bit of leg, due to her love for min-skirts and SHORT dresses.  So Momsen-something that you do well.

But, and there must be a but-the hair.  Normally, I don’t bash the bleached-blonde look, but when it’s that long, and un-kept, I’m not a fan.  That and the makeup.  Most of the pictures that I have showed here have her with sun glasses on-both inside and outside of buildings.  With those glasses though, she’s hiding the insane amounts of black eye shadow that surround her eyes.

One thing that I will say about Momsen however is that I do applaud the fact that she wears what she wants, and doesn’t really care what people think.  She has been named a controversial style icon , alongside Lady Gaga, the Olsen Twins, and Rihanna.

But what does Momsen think of her style?  In a interview with Seventeen Magazine she said:
"I like to wear a lot of baggy things. Like, I buy guys' clothes, like T-shirts, and I cut them up and wear them loose, but my blazers have to be really fitted. I also like layering things and really short skirts — or showing off my legs.”

"Big girls need big diamonds."-Elizabeth Taylor

Elizabeth Taylor.

This week, I'm stepping away from the usual, and paying homage to Elizabeth Taylor.  For decades she was a style icon, and even in the time before her death she was still keeping her own style.

Since her film debut in 1942 with "There's One Born Every Minute,"Taylor changed Hollywood.  Taylor LOVED all things fabulous.  In an article by the LA Times, her jewelry was described as "kumquat-sized diamonds and emeralds" along with dramatic dresses, with Halston, Valentino and Versace as her favorites.  In a November 2009 interview to More magazine, Taylor said "enough is never enough."

Who can blame her for her style?  I mean, she had violet eyes for crying out loud!  Personally, I love her style.  The incredible elegance from the fifties-sigh. But that doesn't mean that you'll be seeing me in class with my huge ballgown and 50 million jewels any time soon.

Maybe she got some of her dramatic sense of style through her work on .  Maybe it's just me, but I think that my head would hurt after wearing that headpiece for about five minutes.

Later in life, Taylor did not lose her love for bold styles.  One could even say that her love increased.  According to this article from People Magazine, Taylor was called the "life of the party" and had "massive stones on every finger."  The then-76-year-old made sure that everyone knew that she was there.  And after all that she has done, she has every right to that.

One last thing for all the fans of her fashion.  According to the Huffington Post, Taylor's jewels will be auctioned.  So start saving your pennies to own a piece of Hollywood's "royal jewels."

Does "Princess Kate" have fairy-tale fashion?

I'm going to travel across the pond.

Unfortunately,  not literally.

Since her engagement to Prince William was announced last November, Kate Middleton has been launched into the international spotlight.  While her title of a "celebrity" proably is not the best fit for her-she will be in line to be queen after all-her style has taken notice.
Especially here in the states.

Here, Kate's outfit I something that I feel I see around campus.  The knee-high boots, jeans, shirt and jacket are some of a girl's most basic wardrobe components, and Kate pulls them off.

Picture: REX
Flowy.  Feminine.  Different from the jeans for certain.  The only thing slightly off-putting?  The wedge/platform shoes.  Maybe it's just me, but I feel like anything with a platform belongs back in the seventies...with the go-go dancers.

Did Kate pick her engagement announcement outfit out herself?  That's something that I don't know.  What I do know, is that as soon as word got out who she was wearing it was the hottest thing on the market.  According to People Magazine, the dress sold out within hours of the announcement in London, and women everywhere were wanting to dress like the future princess.  In fact, this dress was so popular that net-a-porter.com was placing reservations for women to order this moment must-have.  Unfortunately, it's no longer available.

Will Kate keep her style sense once she becomes royalty?  Or will she trade in her jeans and cardigans for some glass slippers and royal jewels?  Guess we'll have to see what happens.

Taylor Swift's fashion love story

Let me begin by saying that I am no way a fashion expert. There is nothing I have that would even prove it.  What you're reading here is the opinion of one self-proclaimed average, in-the-marching-band girl.  This is my opinion of what celebrities wear when their stylists aren't pulling their puppet strings.

The first celebrity up, is Miss Taylor Swift.  The country/pop princess seems to be taking everything by storm.  She got back a few weeks ago from touring Asia, and is now taking on Europe.  With awards season going on, she dropped by the Academy Awards looking radiant in a short gold mini-dress.  But how is her style the rest of the time?

Swift's style is a reflection of her personality: relaxed and a little goofy-as shown through her video blog, twitter account and personality at awards shows and concerts.

Now when she's not performing, Swift is a big fan of her over-sized cardigans, skinny jeans and flats. It's no secret that she's tall, almost 6-foot, so flats and her are BFF.

Her style is definitely feminine.  It seems that in every outfit she wears there is some combination of flow-y fabric, floral patterns, soft colors, headbands, and big tops-oh, and skinny jeans.

I love Swift's style.  Could I pull it off?  No.

Even though she has her roots in country music, don't expect to see this music princess donning pearl-snapped shirts and Levi's all of the time.
